DEVELOPMENT of personality
Order Description
You are required to choose 4 theoretical areas and present these as summaries, with an evaluation. ?
? There are templates for these summaries in your handbooks and on Moodle. ?
? Use third person passive voice throughout. ?
? The focus should be on how each theoretical model explains: ?
? The reason for individual differences in behaviour (PSY2009) ?
? How each theory proposes that personality(as seen by behaviour) ?develops. ?
? Each module will have a different Section 2 and Section3. ?
1. Freudian psychoanalytic theory of personality
2. Post-Freudian: Erikson
3. Behaviourist and social learning theory: from Pavlov to Bandura
4. Dispositional theory of personality: Allport
?
? Section1–brief summary of the core message of the theory and which are the big names – and their contributions.
? So for example, for biological theory – who are the main contributors? What is the core message in biological theories (this is basically the ‘nature’ principle but what about the epigenetics?)
? NO CITATIONS NEEDED-this is demonstrating you understand key issues. ?
? Remember the focus is on the DEVELOPMENT of personality
? How ever it’s important to engage with causality here ?
? So for example, who first proposed that AROUSAL levels in the brain were linked to the basic personality concept of extraversion?
Section 2 = Evaluation of the Theory
? Think about how this theory contributes to understanding human behaviour, and how it may still be used today ?
? What are the strengths of this theory ?
? Provide evidence for ways in which it is useful in modern psychology and other areas
? What are the limitations of this theory?? Provide evidence for ways does in which it not help us to understand behaviour
? CITATIONS ARE NECESSARY
? These must be of research papers which have either confirmed or challenged the theory or aspects of it
? And relate to the argument you are making.?? When you cite a paper, you must give the reference at the END of the section…
? You will still pass without any citations, but they may strengthen your argument ?
? MOST IMPORTANT is the coherence of your statement and your demonstration of critical thinking. ?54 ?
Section 3 (Your reflection)
? Think about how this theory contributes to understanding human personality development ?
? What do you think it explains well? ?
? What do you think it doesn’t explain? ?
? CITATIONS ARE NOT NECESSARY
? This is YOUR OPINION ?
? How do YOU see this theory can explain personality (not just any ?behaviour) ?
? MOST IMPORTANT is the coherence of your statement and your demonstration of critical thinking. ?
