1. Defining Development

Briefly answer the following questions on the basis of your current thinking,in not more than one page.

• what are the defining characteristics – for you – of those nation-states that are conventionally referred to as ‘developing’, ‘poor’ or ‘less developed’ ?
• what term (or phrase) do YOU employ to refer to those countries that are developing ; why do you use this term (or phrase) as opposed to other terms or phrases?
• provide your brief definition of ‘development’ (you may wish to highlight that in your mind it refers to a number of differing meanings)
• what is the most important measure – for you – of poverty or being poor?.
• What are the three main reasons in your view for the continued existence and persistence of mass poverty in the developing world?
