Purpose
Teachers and other school personnel play an important role in helping link families with
community-based organizations and agencies that provide needed services. Every teacher
should know what community resources exist for family referral.

This assignment will help
you build a file of community-based resources in your area and understand the services each
provides.

Assignment
1. Through whatever means are most appropriate, collect information about outside-of school
agencies and organizations in your area. You can make phone calls, conduct
interviews, visit agency locations, access information through the Internet or program
literature, or use several means to investigate each resource you identify.

Find at least one agency in 12 of the categories below:
A. Hotlines for crisis intervention
B. Child care resource and referral agency
C. Child abuse prevention agency and parent support groups
D. Afterschool programs – public and private
E. Family literacy programs
F. Early intervention services and screening agencies
G. Library resources for families, including toy-lending libraries and computers
H. Individual and family counseling agencies
I. Food banks and other crisis assistance
J. Employment counseling/training
K. Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
L. Human services or welfare offices
M. Health care services and clinics
N. Mental health services
O. Planned Parenthood
P. Parenting support groups, including for newborns, parents of multiples, adoptive
families, children with special needs, grief support
Q. Parents Without Partners
R. Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Ultimately, for your work in the field, you should be able to identify agencies and
organizations under each of these heading. So as you continue your undergraduate
course work, you may want to add to the resources you identify for this assignment. You
may also find additional relevant categories to supplement your notebook.
