Students are to write on ONE of the essay topics below.
OPTION 1
Aware that you have been trained in Caribbean history, the editor of a prestigious newspaper has invited you to write an article on a topic related to the region. The editor would like an essay on
the following topic:
The Caribbean is a multicultural and multi-racial region. Much of its diversity can be explained by the link between labour demands and migration patterns in the colonial period. A consequence of
this dynamic has been the movement of people from places as far as Africa, South Asia, and China. Write an article discussing the historical factors that contributed to the racial and ethnic
diversity of the region.
The research for this essay is to be based on secondary sources. No primary research is expected and/or necessary. Students must use a minimum of five (5) academic history articles relevant to
their topic. The use of articles assigned in this course is encouraged and permitted. Students may use printed articles that are housed at Carleton or accessible via the university library (i.e.
Inter- Library Loan). Online articles that are used must also be accessible via the university system (JSTOR, Historical Abstracts, History Cooperative).
Assignment Expectations
1. You should use the APA Citation Style and provide a list of your references (Bibliography) at the end of your article.
2. Essays are to be type-written and in 12p Times New Roman font. Essays are also to be double-spaced.
3. Essays will be evaluated in three areas: content, grammar, and essay construction. Please pay equal attention to each of these components.
OPTION 2
You have been hired by a major online journal to serve as the history specialist. The editor has given you your first assignment:
The United Nations has established a Committee of Experts on the History of Slavery in the Caribbean – which is under the Human Rights Council of the United Nations. This committee has been charged
with investigating the merits of the current lawsuit advanced by fourteen (14) Caribbean countries which are seeking reparations for slavery from Britain, France, and the Netherlands (see article
below from Aljezeera America).
Your assignment as the history specialist is to write an article which investigates the merits of this lawsuit. The report may either defend or argue against the lawsuit. Your findings, however,
must be based on historical research. You are to use academic articles to support your position and should demonstrate your comprehensive knowledge of slavery and its legacy in the Caribbean.
