Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
Order Description
Assignment Remit
Choose a person, who you would like to write a case study about. You can decide to write the report from an applied sport psychology or an applied exercise psychology perspective. Arrange an intake interview with this person. Based on this, you will need to provide a (short) profile of the client and relate the issues arising from the case study to a relevant psychological concept. Discuss how this psychological concept relates to the client’s profile. Outline which psychological strategies you would use when working with this individual. Finally, devise a hand-out for one of the psychological strategies you propose to use to work with to give to the client.
Assignment Guidelines
In order to carry out this assignment well:
• Interview the client, guidelines on how to conduct an intake interview will be given before week 5, and include the questions used as an appendix (this does not count towards the overall word count)
• Provide a profile of the client and the presenting problem (does not count towards overall word count).
• Outline the psychological issues relevant to the case study; that is what is going on in the situation? Critically discuss and evaluate the concept(s) in relation to the case study. You want to demonstrate an understanding of the relevance of the concept to the client and an awareness of the underlying theory (approximately 1000 words).
• Demonstrate how you would work with this individual, thus which psychological strategy/strategies you would use (for example imagery, goal-setting, relaxation) and relate this back to the psychological concept relevant to the case, thus the issue(s) you identified in the previous two points (approximately 800 words).
• Conclude, demonstrating your own personal learning obtained from conducting the case study.
o You can write this section in the first person.
• Design and attach a hand-out for one of the psychological strategies you decided to use when working with the individual (approximately 400 words)
o Is there sufficient information for the client in the hand-out?
? Explain what the strategy is and how the client can use it
o Can the client understand the content of the hand-out?
? Consider including sport-specific examples
o Lay-out and creativity of the hand-out?
o Can the client use the information on the hand-out and apply it?
Please note that the word count in parentheses is an indication only to help you structuring your work. The report is worth 80% and the hand-out is worth 20% of the total mark. Although there is a Part A and a Part B, your will only receive one overall mark for the coursework.
In addition:
• Implement contemporary research from peer-reviewed journals.
• Write in your own words (paraphrase) and consult multiple textbooks and journals.
• Referencing will be assessed, make sure you adhere to the referencing guidelines provided by the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences
• Write in a clear and concise manner and use the third person.
• Carry out a word count (excluding description of case and references) and report this on the first page
• Fill in a cover sheet and attach this to the assignment
Marking criteria: The assignment will be marked using the categorical marking scale and the marking criteria. The marking criteria are based on the generic SSES marking guidelines and can be found in the appendix and Moodle. Please refer to the generic SSES marking guidelines for further guidance on what comprises the difference between marks between 70-79% and those between 80-100%. Although there is a Part A and a Part B, your will only receive one overall mark for the coursework.
3.3 Coursework pre submission feedback
You may arrange a tutorial with the module convenor or seminar leader to receive feedback on a draft of your coursework. Please bear in mind the following:
• I will only look at one draft
• The latest opportunity for feedback is no later than one week before the deadline (only face-to-face, not via e-mail). Because of tutorial hours the last opportunity may be more than one week before. It is your responsibility to arrange this well in advance.
• Be specific regarding what area you want feedback on
• Not “Is this along the right lines…?”, but for example “In this section I have outlined how this theory is relevant, can you comment on the clarity of writing?”
• Email your work beforehand, or bring a printed copy
