Yip, F. et al (2008). The impact of excess heat events in Maricopa County, Arizona: 2000–
​2005. International Journal of Biometeorology, 52 (8), 765-772.

The authors explain that even though exposure to excess heat is preventable it is still the number one cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. They claim that in the summer of 2005, Maricopa county experienced 182% rise in heat related deaths when compared with 2000-2004. Analyzing data from 2000-2005, they found that heat related injuries of the elderly are more likely to indoors, while the injuries to youth are more likely to occur outdoors. They explain that heat impacted a younger population and many deaths occurred outdoors in 2005. They further argue that the data should be used to target those at risk with public heath response activities.
There are nine authors of this report and all hold various government positions related to public health such as the Division of Environmental Hazards and Health Control (EHHC), the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Arizona Health Services (AHS) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One is also a professor at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Given the high status and expertise of the authors on this subject, this is a very credible source. Also, it appeared in an international blind-peer-reviewed journal which is the most respected form of publishing. Seeing as this article appeared in the International Journal of Biometeorology, the audience is likely other scientists and academics concerned with the environment.
I plan to use this research to argue that there is an increasing danger of heat related injury and death, especially for young people. I will then argue that ASU must do more to avoid these injuries by warning students about the dangers of excessive heat
