analyze your media usage using the uses & gratifications model
Just do Step 3 please.
I will upload step 1, and “Uses and Gratifications Model” pdf
*Textbook – Baran, S.J. (2015). Introduction to mass communication: Media Literacy and culture (Updated 8thed.).
Step 1:
Read Chapter 1 carefully and make sure youâre able to distinguish between mass communication, interpersonal communication, and machine-assisted interpersonal communication.
Keep a log of your daily mass media use for 7 full, consecutive days.
Note: You only need to log your MASS communication use. DO NOT log your interpersonal communication or your machine-assisted interpersonal communication (i.e. phone conversations, texting, etc.)
Include the following information in your media log:
The date you used each media vehicle
The specific name of each media vehicle
Donât just say, âI listened to the radio.â State which radio station you listened to. Provide the title of the TV program you watched, the Internet sites you browsed, the books you read, the music you listened to, etc.
The time of day and how long you spent listening, watching, reading etc.
Who you were with when you used each media vehicle (alone, with a friend, several friends, family, etc.)
EXAMPLE OF A MEDIA LOG ENTRY:
Monday, September 14:
9:00-9:15 a.m. looked at Facebook online by myself
11:00-11:30 a.m. read The Daily Illini by myself
3:00-3:30 p.m read the News Gazette by myself
7:00-7:50 p.m. looked at the following Web sites by myself:
Google Maps – 5 min.
CNN.com – 5 min.
Dictionary.com – 10 min.
Facebook – 30 min.
8:00 – 8:20 p.m. Read National Geographic by myself
9:00 – 10:00 p.m. listened to Pink Floyd and Lady Gaga with my roommate.
Be sure your log is neat and organized because you will need to turn it in. I recommend keeping a notebook with you at all times and then transferring the information into a table in Microsoft Word.
Step 2:
After completing Step 1, attempt to be mass media-free for 7 full, consecutive days.
Do your best to avoid mass media completely. Try not to listen to any music, watch TV, read books, watch movies, or use the Internet.
Keep track of your reactions, feelings, and what you did to fill your time. Also keep track of the times you werenât able to remain mass media-free.
CONTINUE TO USE MASS MEDIA TO COMPLETE SCHOOL AND WORK-RELATED PROJECTS IF NECESSARY (but be sure to take note of it)
DONâT WORRY ABOUT MEDIA THAT YOU CANâT AVOID SUCH AS MUSIC PLAYING IN STORES AND BILLBOARDS (but be sure to take note of that too)
Step 3:
At the end of both weeks write a 3-5 page paper (double-spaced, 12 point standard font) analyzing your media use. In addition to writing a good introduction and conclusion, address the following:
Look at the media log you kept during the first week and analyze your media usage using the uses & gratifications model (explained in detail in a linked PDF titled “Uses and Gratifications Model”). Define each element of the model and show how it applies to the way you used media that week. Look for your personal patterns of media usage and draw conclusions about how and why you use media.
Discuss what it was like when you didnât use media for an entire week. Summarize your experience. How did it go? How did you feel? Were you able to go completely media-free? If not, why? How dependent are you on mass media?
