ORDER DESCRIPTION
It seems likely that new graduate nurses’ transitional experiences have a considerable bearing on their developing understanding of the nature of mental health work. Seen from this perspective, regular exposure to the cynical, uncaring and hostile attitudes and behaviours of some of the nursing ‘old hands’ will likely influence whether new graduates come to understand their work primarily in terms of a duty of care or a duty of control. There are important implications here for the recruitment and retention of new graduate nurses for the mental health workforce and for the extent to which the key NMHS policy concerns are likely to be taken up and sustained over time by practitioners in the field” (Hazelton, Rossiter, Sinclair & Morrall, 2011: 183).
Discuss the ways in which advanced practice mental health nurses might provide mentorship and support for new graduate nurses, with a view to addressing the concerns raised by Hazelton, Rossiter, Sinclair and Morrall in the above quotation.
