Accounting & Finance
Order Description
The assignment should be around 1500 words but there are no extra marks/penalties if your word count is more or less than this. The idea of a word count is to set an expectation for how much time and effort should go into this assignment.
The format required is a professional report. So I’d like a cover sheet, an introduction and a conclusion. Plus any appendices that you think are useful. I would like the financial statements that you’ve analysed (P&L, Balance Sheet and possibly Cashflow statement) plus tables of the ratios calculated possibly (although it would be OK to include those in the main body of the report)
The structure needs to be clear to the reader so subheadings are necessary.
Some reminders of what I suggested you could include in your analysis of each of the questions:
Setting the company in context (20%)
This is the mark allocation for the introduction section. In this section you could include the following:
What does your company do?
What types of goods or services does it provide?
How big is the company? What are it’s key strategies?
Where does it operate?
What regions? What countries? What customers does it sell to?
Future prospects?
Expansions or closures. New products they’re launching
Economic and commercial environment
The overall purpose of this is to bring in information that you’ll use later as you analyse the ratios. Make sure you include numbers to explain fully their size, profits etc.
After the introduction you need to choose some useful ratios to help explain the company’s performance and prospects. You only need to use the most recent accounts. So you’re trying to explain the movements from last year to this year.
I would:
* Start by defining the ratio & it’s formula
* Include the result of your calculation
* Comment on what the result tells you about the company, what you think has created that result and what they should do to improve
The marks available are:
Arithmetical accuracy (30%)
This is accuracy of the definition and the application of the formula
Interpretation of the calculation (30%)
These are the comments you make about the result of your calculation. If your comments are not about the company then you won’t score very well.
Making statements like “A rise in debtors days indicates that the company is taking longer to recover it’s debts” will score very little. You need to be thinking about WHY they’re taking longer and what they could do about it.
Use made of information available (10%)
These marks are for showing that you’ve read around the industry, rather than just the company’s accounts. If you use other information (eg interest rates, inflation, competitor prices) then make sure you quote it clearly.
You can clearly get 90% on this assignment without this but quite often people use other sources to help them explain the company’s results so I want to reward that effort.
Structure and eye appeal (10%)
These are marks for quality of English, clear headings and a well constructed argument. The key thought I have is – would I pay for this document? Have you provided useful analysis of the company?
A report will score well if you
* Calculate ratios that tell us something about the company (not just every ratio you can think of)
* Explain WHY the figures have changed not just that they have changed
* Give some specific, practical suggestions as to how you think a ratio could be improved and why
* Conclude at the end what you think of the company’s performance. Have they performed well? What are the main reasons why? What do you think they should focus on next year?
