Abstract Guide

The Abstract is the last section of the lab report you should write, and it is placed at the very beginning of the lab report, after the Title. It’s a very general summary of everything in the lab report, and should be only 1 paragraph long (4-6 sentence) with no references.

Each sentence of the Abstract should cover one section of the lab report sequentially. Sentence(s) 1-2 should cover the Introduction; sentence 3 the Methods; sentence 4 the Results; and sentence(s) 5-6 the Discussion.

Example Abstract

Biodiversity can be a useful metric in determining the health of ecosystems. Freshwater habitats such as ponds can be effectively monitored using such techniques, which are especially relevant considering the threats posed by human development, pollution, and eutrophication. This study sought to address the health of the upper and lower ponds located on the UT Tyler campus. Surveying was performed using seign nets, dip nets, insect nets, and observational counts; and the data was analyzed using a T-test. The results showed a statistically significant difference between the upper and lower pond, suggesting that the upper pond was significantly healthier than the lower pond. This may be due to reduced human usage, higher elevation, and filtering via more prolific vegetation.
