I’m working on a social science writing question and need a sample draft to help me understand better.
check the one that I upload, that is my research, do the literature review for that.
An important part of doing any type of research involves exploring and evaluating what is known in an area before you design a study. This assignment is to learn more about your research question and to summarize what you learn in a “research statement.”
1. Select and critically read at least 7 scholarly works pertinent to your research question. Select articles from “scholarly journals” rather than from “popular journals” (e.g., Time, Newsweek, etc.) or web blogs for this assignment. If you do find some interesting and relevant articles in such magazines, you may read them if you wish but do not include them in your bibliography (unless they are quoted or paraphrased). Limit the number of books you review to 2 at most. Remember how to remedy the most common problems encountered in a literature review by reviewing the relevant slides.
2. Write up the results of your library research in a research statement (i.e., a literature review). I would expect the research statement to be about 2-3 pages double-spaced. Try to summarize, evaluate, and pull together ideas and research rather than report on each article you find in serial fashion (i.e., one after another). You should include the following information about the resources as a whole:
– What pattern of results related to your research question emerges from the studies?
– How do the results of these studies inform your research question?
– Cite, as appropriate, throughout your research statement.
3. Prepare a properly formatted references list for the resources you gathered. This should be prepared according to APA or other legitimate format.
Example: A research study is focused on the opioid use epidemic in the United States (research topic) and whether parental use of prescription drugs encourages opioid use by their children (research question).
After identifying at least 7 scholarly works on the research question, the research statement (#2 above) would focus on the research question (whether parental use of prescription drugs encourages opioid use by their children) and rely on the identified studies (from #1 above) to summarize the entire body of research on the relationship between parental use of prescription drugs and opioid use by their children, addressing: (a) the pattern of results related to the research question from previous studies; and (b) how the results of prior studies inform the research question. Note that this discussion could also summarize research on the relationship between parental substance use and child substance use more generally. The scope of discussion depends on how much research exists on the research topic and research question.
In this example, I would likely first have several paragraphs summarizing the research that has identified: (1) parental drug use (in general) as a predictor of child opioid use; and (2) parental use of prescription drugs as a predictor of child opioid use. I would then focus in more depth on parental use of opioids as a predictor on child opioid use. This would be my main focus of the research statement.
A subsequent paragraph might discuss extensions or exceptions. For example, I might discuss research that finds that parental opioid use causes children to seek out peers who use opioids. In turn, peer opioid use impacts child opioid use. I might also discuss research that finds that parental opioid use does not impact child opioid use.
Finally, I would use the existing research to inform my research question. In this case, the research is consistent about the relationship between parental opioid use and child opioid use, which suggests that my study should find the same relationship.
Citations are necessary throughout the research statement. Any time a statistic or fact is mentioned, a citation is needed. Any time you state your opinion, you need to support it with a citation. Any time you used someone else’s ideas (even when paraphrasing), a citation is needed. Any time you use the direct words of someone else, quotations and a citation are needed.
