The second assignment is an exercise in critical analysis and writing that will help prepare you for the final exam. Your task will be to use your sociological concepts (norms, institutions, bureaucracy, class, legitimacy, etc.) along with the theories of Karl Marx and Michel Foucault to critically evaluate George Orwell’s classic dystopian vision 1984. Is the book still relevant today? Why? Papers must be original essays and supported by references to class discussion and readings.

The main goal of this assessment is to:
- Develop your ability to identify and deconstruct the influence of various sociological concepts within the text.
- Demonstrate linkages between the world described in the text and the social milieu in which we are located.
- Develop strong argumentative skills in developing and defending your sociological analysis.
