Concert Review: Moscow City Symphony “Russian Philharmonic” conducted by Michail Jurowski

The Moscow City Symphony “Russian Philharmonic” under the direction of Michail Jurowski performed at the Moscow International House of Music, Svetlanov Hall on June 20, 2012. The concert lasted approximately two hours and was a formal performance, with the audience dressed in formal attire and the musicians in tuxedos and gowns.

The ensemble was classified as a symphony orchestra, consisting of string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. The ensemble featured violins, violas, cellos, double basses, flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, French horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba, timpani, and various percussion instruments.

The piece performed was Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36, which is a Romantic period piece. This symphony was composed in 1877 and is known for its grandiosity, passion, and intensity. The symphony is divided into four movements, with the first movement marked as Andante sostenuto – Moderato con anima, the second as Andantino in modo di canzona, the third as Scherzo: Pizzicato ostinato – Allegro, and the final movement as Finale: Allegro con fuoco.

There were many positive aspects of this performance. First, the orchestra was extremely well-prepared and performed the piece with great precision and skill. Second, the conductor, Michail Jurowski, did an excellent job of keeping the ensemble together and bringing out the emotional depth of the music. Finally, the musicians played with a lot of passion and energy, which made for an engaging and dynamic performance.

However, there were a few negative aspects of the performance. First, the acoustics of the hall were not ideal, and at times, the sound of the ensemble became muddled and unclear. Second, while the musicians played with a lot of passion, there were times when the intensity of the music overpowered the balance of the ensemble, and some of the details of the music
