Create an outline and draft for your novel essay (see Novel Study Lesson) and submit for review before completing your novel essay. You will receive a mark out of 10 – four for the completion of your outline and six based on this rubric. Make sure you go back and review the Crash Course to Essay Writing if your are struggling.

Considering that this is your last essay for the course and it requires a high level of writing. You will write the essay using your novel notes as a starting point. You must have a well-developed essay with 3-5 integrated quotes per paragraph.

You must consider that while the essay should explore dystopias, and can answer the question: In what three ways does this novel fit the description of a Dystopia OR How does the world of the novel you are studying fit the definition of a Dystopia, other possibilities exist and you can ask the teacher for options not considered here. In writing the essay introduction a clear thesis should be present. The thesis will answer one of these questions or another question that you have cleared with your teacher in advance of beginning the essay outline. You should not write that the essay will describe or talk about Dystopias. You will have to be more clever than this as this is not a thesis.

You will want to choose the categories form your novel notes carefully. Separate those notes where we asked you about things such as POV, that do not have anything to do with the definition of a dystopia, from those that clearly are about the society, such as relationships within the society and so on. In other words, use your understanding of the definition and how the society is structured to decide how to answer the question and form a thesis.
